TRADITIONAL MASTER ARTISAN OF REAL PATOLA SAREES (SANT KABIR AWARD WINNER)

Profile of Artist:

Patan Patola, a traditional form of silk textile that is more than 750 years old, is on the verge of extinction. This ‘dyeing’ art is currently pursued by only four families in Gujarat. Satish Chandra Kantilal is fortunate to be born in a traditional family whose family is into the of making real Patola sarees since 11th century.

The Patola of Patan is done in the double ikat style, which is perhaps the most complicated of all textile designs in the world.

The result is not only a tremendous richness in colour of the fabric, but enables both sides of the sari look exactly alike, and can be worn either way. Patola is also known as resham cheer.

Satish Chandra and his brother Paresh kumar both claim high quality and perfection in their work as they use natural silk and natural colours while manufacturing Patola sarees. It takes around 6 to 8 months to weave the handmade Patola sarees .

Satish Chandra has been honoured for Sant Kabir Award for the unique quality – gorgeous colours, and durability of Patola sarees, whose both the sides have equal intensity of color and design.
